Monsoon Alert: Protecting Your Family from Scrub Typhus in Himachal
June 24, 2026
As the monsoon season brings lush greenery to Himachal Pradesh, it also brings a hidden risk: Scrub Typhus. This bacterial infection, transmitted by tiny, bite-sized mites found in tall grass and damp vegetation, sees a significant rise during the rainy months across our state.
Being informed is the best way to stay safe. Here is everything you need to know to protect your family this season.
What is Scrub Typhus?
Scrub Typhus is a zoonotic disease caused by the Orientia tsutsugamushi bacteria. It is spread to humans through the bites of chiggers—the microscopic, larval stage of trombiculid mites that thrive in scrub vegetation, forests, and grassy fields.
Recognizing the Symptoms
Symptoms typically appear 7–10 days after a bite. Because they often mimic the flu or viral fever, it is easy to overlook them. Do not ignore these warning signs:
- Sudden High Fever: Often accompanied by intense chills and shivering.
- Severe Headache & Body Aches: Persistent pain, especially behind the eyes or in the muscles.
- The “Eschar” (Key Indicator): Look for a small, painless, black scab that looks like a cigarette burn. It is most commonly found in skin folds (armpits, groin, behind the knees, or neck).
- Rash: A pinkish or red rash may appear on the torso and spread to the limbs.
How to Protect Your Kids and Family
During the monsoon, follow these preventive measures to reduce the risk of exposure:
1.Dress for Protection:Best for outdoor play.
When children play in parks or fields, ensure they wear full-sleeved shirts and long pants. Tucking pants into socks prevents mites from reaching the skin.
2.Maintain Hygiene:Essential after outdoor activity.
Always have children take a warm bath and change their clothes immediately after returning from outdoor areas or farms.
3.Clear Your Surroundings:Reduce mite habitats.
Regularly trim tall grass, weeds, and bushes around your home to eliminate the humid, overgrown environments where mites thrive.
4.Use Repellents:When visiting high-risk areas.
Use insect repellents containing DEET or Permethrin on skin or clothing if you are working in agricultural fields or visiting forested areas.
